Francis E. “Chip” Manion Jr., known to everyone as Chip, while regaining much strength after a life-threatening medical illness, died suddenly on May 8th, 2017, at East Jefferson General Hospital after succumbing to an unexpected but rapidly overwhelming illness. He was seventy years young.

A lifelong New Orleanian, Chip attended Holy Name Elementary School, De La Salle High School and University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette.

Both his parents, Francis Sr. and Mary Elizabeth, preceded him in death.

Chip is survived by his wife Lynn who’s been his best friend, constant companion and loving spouse for the last ten years, and also by Lynn’s mother, Kay Gartland, whose love and friendship he deeply cherished.

He is also survived by one sister, Beth Williamson of Dallas, TX and her six children, Mimi, Jay Chris, Gretchen, Trusten and Kenneth. He also leaves behind two brothers, Kernan Manion who lives in Gloucester, MA and Greg Manion, also a lifelong New Orleanian.

Chip loved the outdoors, earlier in hunting and fishing and later avidly taking up golf. A member of Kappa Sigma fraternity whose 50th reunion he had recently attended, he was a natural people person. He was known for engaging complete strangers in warm conversation, offering a genuinely inviting smile and contagious, often room-filling, laughter. Chip especially loved travel adventures with Lynn along with a close circle of friends and just about any occasion for entertaining them especially with his revered barbecued chicken.

After college and service in the US Air Force, he pursued licensure study and undertook learning the personal and commercial insurance business, joining with his father in running his well-regarded independent agency. After Francis Sr. died in 1993, Chip arranged to blend the Manion agency with the Gaynell Martin Insurance Agency where he enjoyed serving a diversity of clients for nearly twenty five-years.

Chip and Lynn send special thanks to the excellent and dedicated team of medical professionals at East Jefferson General Hospital and Hermann Memorial Hospital (Houston) who expertly steered him through several major medical challenges. Special thanks are offered with heartfelt appreciation to physicians Dr. Songy and Dr. Deffer whose compassion and care were exemplary. Additionally, family friend Dawn Hymel served as a selfless and deeply caring aide and support to Chip and Lynn during these medically precarious times.

Services, scheduled for Sat., May 13th, 2017, are being handled by Lakelawn Metairie Funeral Home, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans, LA 70124. Visitation for immediate family is 9-10 am and all family, friends and acquaintances are warmly welcomed from 10 am - 12 noon. A memorial service with opportunity for spoken tributes will be offered beginning at noon. At Chip’s request, there will be no graveside service.

If so inclined and in lieu of flowers, Chip and Lynn encourage you to consider a donation in Chip’s name to the St. Jude Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Louisiana SPCA or the Staff Development Fund of The Foundation at East Jefferson General Hospital.
